The mother ripped the wheel to the right, almost rocketing off the shoulder and into the endless desert. They slid to a stop and the smoke finally reached them, an oily black billow that wrapped around their faces, smothering and erasing all thought. The girl, coughing and crying but not yet full of the wild animal panic that would come moments later, managed to unbuckle herself and quickly open the door, flinging herself out into the dirt.
